Over the past 15 years, the old-time string band Old Crow Medicine Show has blazed their own path from the Appalachian foothills to Nashville. They’ve also helped spawn a roots music revival that has launched bands like Mumford and Sons and the Lumineers. Now, the band has become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry. Here’s more on how Old Crow Medicine Show has made its place in country music.

The Old Crow Medicine Show got their first break in Nashville when they were invited to entertain guests by busking on the plaza outside the Opry house. On Tuesday, right before their induction ceremony, Old Crow Medicine Show surprises fans by walking outside and performing two songs for the crowd, just like they did years ago.

Ketch Secor, Frontman, Old Crow Medicine Show, said, "It wasn’t really until I guess about 15 years ago the Opry became this green pasture on the hill for us, that we’ve been looking at as sort of a prize that we’ve had our eyes on for all these years."

Chris "Critter" Fuqua, Frontman, Old Crow Medicine Show, said, "I grew up, we both grew up, listening to Nirvana and the Pixies, They Might Be Giants, and of course, Bob Dylan, it was the grunge era. When we started playing this stuff, people really took notice because it was brand new for them. It was brand new for us. We realized that we could put that energy that any teenager into folk music."

Old Crow’s induction into country’s elite group harkens back to the early days of the Opry, where string bands and banjos were the dominant sounds. But popular country music has changed drastically in the last 20 years.

Ketch Secor, Frontman, Old Crow Medicine Show, said, "And we still love country, but country has changed. Even the stuff in the ’90s, you put it on next to what you hear today, and the gap? You can’t believe it’s 20 years, you know, sonically."

Old Crow Medicine Show has sold more than 800,000 albums, with the song "Wagon Wheel" selling more than 1 million copies, despite not having mainstream radio success.
