One of Denmark’s leading film directors is about to release his most painful and important work yet. The movie called "Sorrow and Joy" will premiere and compete at the festival. The Director, Nils Malmros, says the movie shows how true love and forgiveness can conquer all.

Nils Malmros has always made autobiographical films, and Sorrow and Joy deals with the most painful episode of his life. In 1984, while suffering from profound depression, his wife, Marianne killed their daughter Anne. In the film, Marianne’s character is called Sine.

The Director, Nils Malmros, says the movie shows how true love and forgiveness can conquer
all.

“I hope everyone who sees the film will love Signe. And understand her feeling and her sorrow. So in some way it’s a love letter to my wife,” film director Aston Nils Malmros said.

The forgiveness of Nils Malmros and supporters of his wife, spared her from incarceration. A judge decided that she should receive psychiatric care instead. As Malmros says, when you are psychotic, it’s impossible to be guilty.

Malcolm Brabant: Is your wife still in pain?

“Yes of course she is in pain now and then. And there’s something I never asked her. I respect that she has secret rooms where I am not admitted. And out of respect I don’t ask her. I haven’t really asked her what happened that day,” Aston Nils Malmros said.

Malcolm Brabant: You still haven’t asked?

"No. Not more than you hear in the film. And she has her secrets and I hope she has talked to the psychiatrist about them. But I have never asked her. And I respect that I shall not ask her more than I have done.”

Malcolm Brabant: Has she seen the film?

Malcolm Brabant: What does she think of it?

“She said she wouldn’t see it. But she’s seen it once. She cried in all the right places where she should cry. And after the film she said this is a big victory for both of us.”

Malmros’ fragile wife is being kept out of the limelight during promotion of the film. But if it should be nominated for the Foreign Language film Oscar, then she says that she will go to Hollywood.

The film is dedicated to the couple’s dead daughter. She would have been thirty next year had she lived. Malmros has called this his last film as he has nothing left to say.
