New York City & Lima ring in Lunar New Year

02-02-2014 18:53 BJT

As we’ve just seen, people all over the world are working together to keep the festival’s traditions alive. And more and more overseas Chinese people are coming together to honour Lunar New Year.

Crowds gather in New York on Friday to mark the arrival of the Lunar New Year. Firecrackers and confetti are set off to celebrate. And folk performances and lion dances fill the streets to welcome the Year of the Horse.

"I think what’s special is families coming together, eating, celebrating together. It’s a new year of new hopes. You know, all the bad energy from the prior years - we’re gonna bring it towards the new year." Said New York resident Eric Ha.

Lunar New Year is the perfect way to show Chinese culture to foreigners, and also to spread awareness of Asian culture in general.

"Our purpose is to promote this culture to our second and third generation, and to the American mainstream. And the response is tremendous." Steven Tin, executive director of Better Chinatown, told us.

Meanwhile, crowds also gather in Lima’s Chinatown on Friday. People of Chinese ethnicity make up about 10 percent of Peru’s population. Spectators fill the streets to get a glimpse of the festivities. As part of the lion dance, performers look for pieces of lettuce, which represent good luck.

"We are celebrating The Year of the Horse, which is celebrated every 12 years because each zodiac sign rotates each year depending on the year." One spectator Jaime Siu said.

Siu thinks the year of the horse is going to be a great one, and hopes it will bring more joy, prosperity and good health to everyone.
