Chinese New Year celebrations dazzle around the globe

Celebrations marking the Spring Festival around the world are testament to how much of an influence Chinese culture is having globally.

From London to Vienna, to Chicago, people are being dazzled by colourful performances and celebrations. Traditional new year events and Peking Opera shows are some highlights that we find out more about next.

At London’s Lyceum Theatre, a Chinese New Year performance called "Culture of China, Festival of Spring" is drawing in crowds. Traditional Chinese dancing, acrobatics and magic shows are welcomed by the audience.

In the Austrian capital Vienna, Chinese Peking Opera masters are staging a much
anticipated performance at the the city’s Golden Hall.

"So many Chinese stars performed here, lots of traditional culture, it’s just like being back in China." a tourists said.

The performance has toured for five consecutive years over the Chinese Lunar New Year. This is the first of four shows in their world tour this year.

In the Austrian capital Vienna, Chinese Peking Opera masters are staging a much anticipated performance at the the city’s Golden Hall. Over 20 performers took part in the show. The most notable performer is Mei Baojiu, the apprentice of the legendary Peking opera master Mei Lanfang. Now in his eighties, he delivered a stunning performance with his apprentices of the classic piece "Song of the Pear Blossom".

"I wanted to make myself stand out as a teacher. So I wore a suit and they wore Peking Opera costumes. I want to stress that Peking Opera is an art passed from generation to generation." Mei Baojiu, Peking Opear Master said.

And in the streets of Chicago, crowds are undeterred by the freezing weather, flocking to the Chinese New Year parade.

Chicago is aiming to become one of the most "Chinese friendly" cities in the US. Its Chinatown is 101 years old and is one of the oldest in the world.

With such a long friendship with China, analysts believe Chicago will likely achieve its goal in the near future.
