Lantern Festival is also a tradition in Hong Kong, when lovers and families venture out to look at lanterns. Zhu Dan went to Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour, and spoke to one lantern designer about the festival, which is extra-special this year as it coincides with Valentine’s Day.

The 14th of February this year is the Spring Lantern Festival, a special day when traditionally
girls come out to meet their beloved ones.

Cupid’s arrow strikes twice this February 14.

Once every 19 years, Valentine’s Days overlaps with the Chinese equivalent.

The 14th of February this year is the Spring Lantern Festival, a special day when traditionally girls come out to meet their beloved ones.

So, this year in Victoria Harbour, the theme of the annual lantern display is "Roaming in Love".

"This year is very special, east and west to enhance the atmosphere of joy and love." Connie Lee, Senior Manager of HK Leisure & Culture Services Dept., said.

Traditional wedding customs from different countries are being showcased here, with both an Eastern and Western flavour.

When you cross this traditional Western-style gate a classic image of Western weddings is created. But the other side tells a different story, with Chinese "Dragon and Phoenix Candle" lanterns creating a traditional Chinese wedding scene. But no matter whether it’s West or East, it’s all about love.

Leo Tang is the mastermind behind the event. In his creations, he has added his own understanding of love.

"Love is not only about romance, but also wishing for a happy ending for every couple." Leo Tang said.

He shares his idea of love with his girlfriend and the pair are enjoying the lanterns before Valentine’s Day.

He says that whether it’s a royal wedding, a Chinese wedding, South Korean or Japanese, the attire may be different, but the message of love is always the same.

"We'll get married this year." Leo Tang said.

"It's the next phase of our life together." Leo Tang's girlfriend said.

So it seems that love is truly in the air, as two special days celebrating unity converge.
