First Oscar concert honors nominated composers

02-26-2014 19:06 BJT

The 2014 Academy Awards are nearly here, which usually means the film award season is coming to an end. But things are a little bit different this year. After 85 years, Oscar is putting on his very first concert to celebrate the year’s nominated music.

The concert will be held at UCLA’s Royce Hall this Thursday, and feature all five original scores, plus four original songs up for Oscars this year. An 80-piece orchestra will be conducted by each nominated composer.

"Well, what’s going to happen is a first-time event. It really is a historic event. This is something that has never been done before. This is a first-time-ever concert by the motion-picture academy presenting all the current Oscar-nominated scores and songs," Charles Fox, governor of Music Branch, Ampas, said.

This year’s program includes Five-time Oscar winner John Williams with "The Book Thief", Arcade Fire members playing "Her", and 12-time Oscar nominee Thomas Newman with "Saving Mr. Banks".

As for the original songs, Jill Scott is set to sing Pharrell Williams’ "Happy" from "Despicable Me 2"... while "Let It Go" from "Frozen" will be performed by its writers, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

Performers for U2’s song "Ordinary Love" from "Mandela" and Karen O’s "The Moon Song" from "Her" are yet to be announced.

"Well, it’s a question of time. The Oscar broadcasts always have to be just a little long - or we think just perfect, actually - but there is no time to play this kind of music, maybe just when they show the five composers and they walk onto the stage, they play 10 seconds of it, five seconds, so that is all they have time for. There are too many things to do at the Oscars and maybe there is an occasional dance or something to one of the pieces or a montage to some of the pieces. That is why this evening is so important," Charles said.

Meanwhile, the performers of the nominated songs, including Idina Menzel who sings "Let It Go" in "Frozen," are set to appear on Sunday at the Academy Awards.
