Dialogue 10/05/29 Nuclear consensus to be reached

Nearly 200 nations, signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), have agreed to work towards a nuclear-weapons-free zone in the Middle East, which will likely take the process a small step closer to de-nuclearization. The NPT which has been "hanging fire" with little or no progress in the last decade could well be revived through the consensus agreement under which the official nuclear powers- the US, UK, Russia, China and France - also agreed to expedite reduction of their nuclear arsenal. A major point though was Israel, which is not a signatory to the NPT with the Jewish state adopting an ambiguous policy of not denying or admitting its nuclear capability, although it is widely believed that it does possess nuclear weapons.
