Dialogue 10/12/16 Pre-marital property in dispute

12-16-2010 22:11 BJT

China may recognize homes purchased single-handedly before marriage as the buyer''s personal asset, thus making them immune from a partition at divorce settlements. The move was proposed by China''s Supreme People''s Court as the top judiciary body subjected to public scrutiny a new draft bill on its interpretations of the marriage law. The new bill is likely to ease common marriage phobia shared among young people who fear that divorce would take away half the property for which they have worked so hard on their own before marriage. But, experts worry about an increasing divorce rate if the proposal survives the public debate, since it would make a divorce decision much easier. The draft bill also touched upon other issues about marriage that claimed wide public attention in recent years, such as child care and extra-marital affairs. (DIALOGUE Edition 350-2010)
