Dialogue 11/08/29 Japan elects new PM 19:30

08-29-2011 20:50 BJT

After fierce competition, Japan's ruling DPJ party has picked its new leader, who'll be the nation's sixth prime minister in five years. 54-year-old Finance Minister, Yoshihiko Noda, will take over from outgoing Prime Minister Naoto Kan, after defeating trade minister, Banri Kaieda, in a second-round vote.
But the new leader cannot expect an easy administration in light of Japan's earthquake and tsunami, which adds a new pressure to its stagnant economy. Will the new prime minister change the gloomy economy currently haunting Japan? How will he overcome the challenges his country faces regarding the nuclear crisis, earthquake and tsunami? And will this new Prime Minister last longer in cabinet than his predecessors?
To help answer these questions, we have in our studio Professor Gui Yongtao from Peking University. We will also be joined by Terrence Terashima, our correspondent in Tokyo and over the phone by Yoichi Shimatsu, former editor of the Japan Times.
