Dialogue 11/09/14 Garbage disposal in China

09-14-2011 21:12 BJT

It is a wake-up call: two thirds of the 668 cities in China are surrounded by mountains of garbage, which threaten to pollute our underground waterb and the air quality. The cheap landfills take much of the blame due to shortage of funds. However, construction of incineration plants has met strong protests and basically grinds to a halt in many cities. Ironically, most of the protesters have no idea about garbage sorting, adding to the costs of refuse disposal. And no one tells them how to separate the kitchen waste. Compared to our neighboring country of Japan, China has a lot to learn to improve our sanitation and health
conditions. Today we are joined here in the Beijing studio by Mr. Li Bo, director general of Friends of Nature, a well-known NGO of environmental and animal protection here in Beijing.
