During times of crisis, people want information. They turn to news sources to find out what is happening and to help them figure out what might happen. At the same time, news sources are working at full capacity on short deadlines. Under these circumstances, false reports are sometimes circulated and believed. The BBC was also facing a leadership crisis with growing doubts being expressed by senior corporation executives about the judgement of the Director-General Mark Thompson.
