Ever since China’s acception to APEC in the year 2001, the US appears to have displayed more interest in geopolitical issues than economic collaboration. The absence of President Obama from this year’s APEC meeting will steal the spotlight from other issues of great urgency. China and the US seem to be embroiled in deep strategic mistrust. APEC is not known for major policy breakthroughs. But can this year’s gathering held for the first time by Russia provide a silver bullet?
