Dialogue 09/22/2012 Prudence in US-China military ties

09-23-2012 04:38 BJT

Today we take a closer look at the US’s intention to focus its defense strategy on Asia. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said during his trip to China that the attempt to rebalance in Asia is not to contain the rise of China but to engage. Can we trust him? He says the US seeks to establish the most important bilateral ties in the world. But the presidential race smacks of strategic rivalry, and the US offers to protect the cold war military alliance and set up a missile shield in our neighborhood while it remains the strongest and unrivalled military power. How should we examine US-China relations and military ties? Above all, why do we refuse to trust the US?

We are cautiously optimistic when the US Government makes it clear in open statements that it does not want to stifle the development of China. And there is at least one consensus that the Pacific Ocean is big enough to accommodate the national interests of both countries. The growing regional uncertainty and volatility in Asia over territorial claims test the patience and wisdom of Beijing and Washington, and threaten to take Asia back to the 19th century. We understand and selectively accept the US leadership but Washington has to assume its due responsibility to build reliable trust.
