Many Americans complain that most Chinese are ungrateful for what the US has done to engage China since Nixon’s visit in 1972. They argue that it is the US that has paved the way for ending China’s isolation during the cold war and China’s entry into the WTO in 2001. The alleged assertiveness of China has upset Washiongton who is pivot to Asia in return, alerting China to what amounts to containment given the trust deficit.
