Wechat which allows users to send text and voice messages and even hold Wifi video chat have attracted 300 million subscribers all over the world. It has made its owner public treated company Tencent extremely popular in China. However a recent suggestion by the officials in the Chinese government’s Telecommunication Department regarding a possible fee to be levied on Tencent for the teleresources uses to run the lab has made consumers very agitated in China. Many have questions about the nature of the debate. Is it a fight between a state-owned telecommunication company and an originally private business which enjoys big share of the market here? Or is it one that will shape the internet’s fundamental principles and models in this country?
