Dialogue 04/23/2013 Japan MPs visit Yasukuni Shrine

04-24-2013 05:14 BJT

168 Japanese members of parliament have made a group visit to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. It’s the first time since 2005 that more than 100 Japanese MPs have done so. The visit follows donations by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and weekend visits by three cabinet ministers to the controversial war shrine. Analysts attribute the rise in numbers to the victory of conservative parties in December’s general election. China and South Korea have repeatedly demanded that Japanese leaders stop visits to Yasukuni and take a responsible attitude toward history. The shrine is seen as a symbol of Japan’s former militarism.
