The Missing ancient architectures Part 1- The miraculous Xianyang Palace of the Qin Empire

05-30-2011 00:25 BJT

Xianyang, a small city in the west China, used to be the capital of the mighty Qin Empire 2,000 years ago. When Jia Yi worked out his well-known masterpiece on the Errors Committed in the Qin Dynasty in the early Han Dynasty, the spectacular city had burnt down to debris. But in his eyes, the ruins were more like a historic monument.

In 227 Bc, Jing Ke sacrificed his life in a failed assassination of the Qin ruler who later annexed six other states to unify China. However, Jing ke's bravery encouraged more assassinations. At elite musician later became eye-catching in Records of the Grand Historian- Memoirs of the Assassins for his desperation in the anti-Qin move. He was Gao Jianli. What resentment could it be to provoke a musician into the confrontation with the mighty Qin? Zhu, the prototype of today's zither, was a tool for Gao Jianli to tell out his feeling and an evidence for his friendship with Jing Ke. Unlike Jing Ke, Gao was a yan native. As indignation over Qin's invasion, distress for his destroyed home and Jing Ke's death converged, a revenge plan flashed in his mind. But how?

There was a big doubt over the assassination. It's said that everything went smoothly as planned, but Jing Ke's fellow Qin Wuyang unexpectedly sank to the ground as they were stepping upstairs to the throne. Qin Wuyang had been famous in the Yan State for committing a homicide at the age of 13, was he scared only by the majesty of the Qin palace?

It's a turning point for Qin to designate Xianyang as its new capital. Surrounded with mountains, Xianyang was invulnerable to offense. It was also an advanced transportation hub in central Shaanxi, along the middle reaches of the Yellow River. The geographic advantage guaranteed a strategic upper hand over the vassal states located downstream. The capital shift revealed the ambition of Qin ruler.
