Editor's Note- 8-part documentary: The Ancient Tea Road

Resembling the famous Silk Road, the Ancient Tea Road located in southwestern China was an important gateway for transportation and communication between ancient China and West Asia. It was a giant platform for the political economic social and cultural intersection of different ethnic groups and a gigantic lifeline stretching on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.




Today, although the Tea Horse Road is no longer active as a trade route,we can still see the evidence of many years of cultural exchange and properity. Visitors will find all teh regions of the Tea Horse Road to be incredibly rich, idverse and full of natural beauty. Whether through sampling the delicacy of aged Pu´er tea, browsing the handcrafted wares of Dali, or elephant-watching from a viewpoint up in the trees at Xishuagnbanna, one will discover the ripe, exotic fruits of southern China tourism along the ancient Tea Horse Road.


This ancient trade route spans an impressive 2,350 kilometers, traversing some of the most diverse and mutable terrains in the world. For thousands of years, travelers have been lured across its snow-capped mountains, precipitous canyons and vibrant streaming rivers to discover some of the most beautiful landscapes in all of China.
