Part 2- Business Serving China
This is the Beijing- Hangzhou Grand Canal, at 1794 km in length. Over 40 km of it run through the Wuxi area, almost 15km of which are within the city.Jiangnan- style houses sit along both sides of the canal, their reflections in the water, which retain the charm of this southern town.
Part 3- Daring to Enter Shanghai
In November, 1916, a reinforced concrete bridge, known as Wuqiao to the locals, appeared over the Wuxi section of the Beijing- Hangzhou Grand Canal. Modeled after Shanghai´s Waibaiduqiao, the bridge shrank the distance between the two cities.Wuxi businessmen traveled heavily on the bridge, leaving indelible marks of that legendary time.
Part 4- Changing with the Times
On the night of July 20, 1923, trouble rose unexpectedly on a small, quiet street in Wuxi´s Zhouxin township. The 72 year old Zhou Shunqing passed away after developing pneumonia. In the last years of his life, Zhou´s business had become increasingly stagnant.
Part 5- Fortunes of distinguished families
This is Huishan, just 1 km away from Wuxi, where the ancient Jing- Hang Canal passes by along its eastern side. Via a small river, boats can reach the foot of Huishan. This narrow river was the only way by which the Ming/Qing emperors could visit Huishan.
Part 6- Great prospects
This is Wuxi´s local newspaper, the Ren Bao, printed on June 14, 1946. A passage in the report titled Rong Desheng on Greater Wuxi read: " Geographically, Wuxi borders Suzhou to the east and Changzhou to the west. With the continued development, the three cities will merge. "
Part 7- Ambitions
On May 24, 1949, the Chinese People´s Liberation Army entered Shanghai. Citizens were excited but uneasy as they were greeting a new era. Among them was the young manager of the Rong´s enterprises, Rong Yiren.
