Faces of Africa: Modern Warrior

08-20-2012 02:34 BJT

To save an ancient culture, Moses Samante must conquer the modern world. One nation, two warriors, fighting to change Africa’s future.

It was my dream that I can be able to make it and do something good because I see the community is looking upon me.

Deep inside the Maasai Mara, the jewel of Kenya’s game reserves, just as his ancestors have done for centuries…a Maasai warrior is on the hunt.

Moses Ole Samante, a modern warrior who tries to embrace his Maasai culture and
modern life. Many of the African ethos have since faded away though Maasai culture
has remained put.

My name is Moses Ole Samante. I am a warrior. I want to be one of the biggest tour operator in Kenya.

I can know where the buffalo can target the people to kill. I can know where the elephant can hide himself. I can know where the lion can sleep. I think I’ve seen a lion.

Look at that animal! For Moses, lion hunting is a lucrative business. Once, like any true tribal warrior, he would have approached, spear in hand. Once, like any true tribal warrior, he would have approached, spear in hand. But for him, and the rest of the Maasai, times have changed.

I remember a story that I went to when I was like 12 , 13 years and I see the small lion I carry one home for the lion to be my dog but my father beat me so much that I have bring it back he told me that I have many boys so if the lioness is going to eat you I don’t mind.

Man says, "Look, they’re moving to the other side!"

Woman says, "These animals are amazing."

Man says, "Yeah, very dangerous!"

Even though these tourists are Maasai, too… some of them have never seen the famous creatures in their own backyard.

So they’ve asked Moses to be their guide, a rare treat, now that he employs six drivers, part of Kenya’s 700 million dollar tourism trade.

Many of the companies in Kenya are owned by French people, German people, American. But actually what they’re doing I can also do.

So, it was my dream that also me, like an African, I can be able to make it and open my own company.

At 31, Moses seems to have the world at his feet, an apartment in a lavish suburb of Nairobi, two young sons and a devoted wife.

My name is Evelyn Samante. I am married to Moses.

Some of the traditional Maasai warriors. A stereotype image that most people have
on the Maasai warrior is that of a tall and slender man clutching a spear in one
hand with his red cloth wrapped around his waist or over his shoulder.

I was in need of a girl whereby she’s a little bit tall, smart and beautiful also. So I just get the right person whereby it is Evelyn.

Before they’d even met, Moses was helping to pay Evelyn’s high school tuition, she’s one of several Maasai who only gained an education, with his support.

He is good, good looking, he is also generous then I loved him .But in Maasai culture, love is not enough. According to tradition, the groom must give the bride’s family a dowry.

We wanted to get married, but we couldn’t because there was a big drought and all my cows died. So I couldn’t have anything to give to the family.
