First Bin Laden film premieres

11-05-2012 10:47 BJT

With just one day left for American voters to make their minds, a new movie portraying the raid on Osama Bin Laden's compound is airing on us television, and a second movie by an Oscar winning director is due out next month – the timing of both is generating some accusations of a propaganda effort by the white house who cooperated closely with both films.

At the white house, CCTV’s Nina Donaghy has more on their possible impact on voters.

Early reviews of the movie that screens tonight are not too favorable so far – saying this movie is not really to be taken very seriously – it focuses very much on the raid itself, it’s more of an action movie. The movie coming out in December on the other hand focuses on the CIA angle and is said to be the definitive account of the raid.  One thing’s for sure, and, the bin laden narrative is sure to be part of American popular culture for years to come.

The daring raid on Osama Bin Laden’s Abbottabad compound in May 2011 was the stuff of Hollywood – A covert night raid by the elite us navy seal force, based on actionable intelligence that took the CIA years to gather - and a bold decision to enter Pakistani territory without permission by an American president.

But now, the inevitable Hollywood versions are coming – a big budget thriller directed by Katherine Bigelow who won an Oscar for the Iraq war movie “The Hurt Locker” out in December, but with trailers already in American movie theatres - “ Zero Dark Thirty” – stars actress Jessica Chastain as a CIA officer and is already generating Oscar buzz.

But out sooner – and on the eve of the US presidential election – a version of events courtesy of the national geographic channel.

No star names in this one – except –playing himself - Barack Obama.

But is the timing of “Seal Team Six” - on us television, 2 days before Americans vote – an eleventh hour attempt to influence voters?

Peter Earnest is a former CIA operative who has advised several Hollywood directors:

Peter said, “If someone is undecided and they happen to see a film like this – it  places the president in a very positive light – yes it could have a very positive effect.”

Not just movies - the raid also generated a bestselling book by a member of the real seal team.  And Barack Obama himself has joked that the operation was the best thing that happened to his presidency:

Obama said, “The final debate is on foreign policy - spoiler alert: we got bin laden.” Reporter: One point worth a mention is  that in the movie showing here this evening – in the original version Mitt Romney made a brief appearance – shown making comments five years ago that he didn’t feel so much attention should be focused on hunting down just one man –those comments were removed by the president of the  national geographic channel – for fear that the movie would look too pro Obama.
