Intro:
Shaanxi Province in China’s northwest is a particularly rich source of cultural relics. Among them are more than 80 imperial tombs, many of which have yielded vast troves of treasures. However, these tombs present one major problem; being located mainly in open fields, they are hard to monitor, which leaves them vulnerable to being robbed. To combat this problem, in 2000 the National Bureau of Cultural Relics and the Shaanxi Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics decided to research and develop an underground monitoring device.

The alarm system developed in the 1960s marked merely the beginning of the research into monitoring devices. The 1980s saw the development of several new systems.

The Luoyang spade is something that attracts praise and condemnation in equal measure. On the positive side, it played a key role in the excavation of the famous Yin Ruins and Shang City Ruins. However, the man who invented the spade was a tomb robber, and over the centuries many ancient tombs have been entered by criminals using Luoyang spades.

Outro:
In recent years, high technology has been playing a major role in archaeological excavation and cultural relics protection. One breakthrough is the alarm system that picks up seismic waves. It works round-the-clock, and can detect any digging in the protected area. It has been instrumental in cutting the number of tomb robberies in Shaanxi Province.
