Journeys in time 2010-5-30 Secrets of the Fujian Tulou Part 5- A lasting bond

05-30-2010 16:36 BJT

A tulou is a multi-storey earth-built structure, designed for both communal living and defensive purposes. The tulous were built by the Hakka people of southern Fujian, mostly between the 12th and the 20th centuries. Although the Hakka people obviously appreciate the benefits of their home comforts and a communal way of life, they have never confined themselves to the area. The fact is, the Hakka people are great travellers. They love to see the world. Not only that – they set great store by a successful career. What this means is that many of them have left home in search of their fortune. Ultimately, though, they yearn to return to their roots back in their Tulou.

"Echoes from a Tulou" by Liu Yuan is an artistic and harmonious combination of western culture and the folk music of the Fujian Tulous. It expresses the uplifting spirit of the Hakka people. The music is popular among people both in China and abroad.

Zheng Xiaoying, Xie Yaocheng and Wu Boxiong, like most members of the older generation who have been living away from home for some time, have very strong feelings for their Tulous. The old buildings are like a symbol of their nostalgia for the place of their birth. Now, however, in the 21st century, do the younger people still feel the same way about the tulous?

The Fujian Tulous, with their fascinating history, are much more than simple dwellings; they are museums recording the trials, tribulations and triumphs of the Hakka people. Now, with international recognition in the form of World Heritage site status, the Tulous have become a major tourist attraction. Though old, these unique earthen towers manage to retain a sense of great vitality. With their future assured, we can be confident that they will be respected and appreciated for many generations to come.
