Video: Interview with Yu Zhengsheng, Party Secretary, Shang Hai Committee of the CPC

Intro:

A vast population with an unrelenting need for sources of energy.  How will the new Program fuel growth?

VERITY: 798 Art District, Beijing

It’s a beautiful sunny day here in Beijing, but this setting shows the threat to our environment:  Rapid industrial growth. But the 12th 5-year Guideline could change all that.  There’ll be targets to further reduce energy emissions and the dependence on coal.  China could leap ahead into a new age of alternative energies. Already a leader in solar energy use, China is on a drive to take this further.

So are the 3 golden letters: GDP going to be replaced by sustainable development as the guide to growth? Is China going green? If so, it’s a bold step, but at least we’ll all breathe more easily.  So how will these goals be met?

YU ZHENGSHENG, Party Secretary, Shang Hai Committee of the CPC

YU: Low-carbon and green technology is a big priority for humanity if we want to live in harmony with nature.

Voice Over:

Big subsidies will fuel green energy projects using wind power and nuclear and hydropower.

The goal to reduce energy consumption from fossil fuels by 20% was just about achieved in the last 5-year Plan. This was part of the pledge to bring carbon intensity down 45% by 2020. Green indicators will hold local government accountable for reaching these new targets.

So it looks like China is on a drive to change the footprint from carbon to green. I guess you could say that’s another label change? Solar energy suppliers will be busy making solar panels. Using the sun to generate power. And even the traffic lights.
