China´s first artistic hotel

06-11-2010 16:25 BJT

This hotel looks quite different from ordinary ones that have only one style and guestrooms that all look the same. Guests embark on a breathtaking and colorful tour when they walk from the lobby through the corridors to their rooms. Many people come all the way to this hotel just to experience the special atmosphere here.

You may wonder who is the designer of this unique hotel——Rong Yi, who is also the hotel's chairman.

Dream of being an artist

Since he was very young, Rong took to drawing and painting and aspired to become an artist. He graduated from the Guangzhou Fine Arts Academy in 1995 when he was 22. Bored with campus life, he gave up the opportunity to teach at the academy and decided to make his fortune elsewhere.

After graduation, Rong had first worked in a ceramics workshop, then opened a restaurant and nightclub and even started a design company. In 10 years, he had worked in more than 10 industries and had accumulated a considerable amount of money by 2006. But he still believed he hadn't found the very thing that would satisfy his heart.

After ten year's of searching around, Rong hit upon the idea of running such a hotel completely by chance.

Inspiration from pictures

In autumn 2006, pictures of a hotel in Spain captured the attention of the depressed man when he was surfing the internet. It was Hotel Puerta America in Madrid. It is said the hotel was jointly designed by 19 of the world's most distinguished designers and was acclaimed as the 21 century's design culture museum. It was because of this hotel that Madrid changed its image in the eyes of the world and emerged as an up-and-coming design capital.

Investment Problem ocurred

Hotel Puerta America sparked Rong's enthusiasm again. There was no such hotel in China that time, so he decided to open one in Shenzhen, featuring artistic designs and combine them with hotel management. But the project demanded a huge investment that Rong could not afford on his own. He explained the idea to his friends, and two of them became interested.

Cao Lei, who does financial investment, and Deng Hai, who has a computer business, are Rong's old friends. They immediately approved of his project.

Deng Hai, Rong Yi’s friend, said, "There wasn't a hotel like that. I believed the idea was quite original."

Without thinking too much, the three young men decided to open a hotel of this kind together. Soon, they chose the Shenzhen Grand Theater to house their hotel. The building is one of the city's earliest landmark structures. Rong and his partners decided to transform the three-story theater with street frontage into a hotel.
