China and Sri Lanka have maintained diplomatic relations since 1957. There have been frequent high-level contacts and smooth economic cooperation throughout the years.

The South Asian island nation was described by Marco Polo as being the most graceful.

It is rich in resources, including diamonds, and produces black tea and spices. After the defeat of the Tamil Tiger rebels in May 2009, the country began reconstruction.

Despite the global economic crisis, its economy still increased by 3.5%. And the World Bank predicts its economy to increase by 5.5% in 2010.

Chinese companies have been involved in many reconstruction projects, including highway construction, telecommunications and the service sector.

D. M. Jayaratne, Sri Lankan Prime Minister, said, "Actually China is playing an important role in Sri Lanka's reconstruction."

Beneficial economic cooperation between China and Sri Lanka began in 1982. China's major imports from Sri Lanka are rubber, black tea, precious stones and palm oil. Its main exports to Sri Lanka are textiles, machinery and electronic products. Sri Lanka's Prime Minister says the two countries have a good relationship.

The relationship between China and Sri Lanka has always been friendly and Colombo has provided strong support to China on the Taiwan and Tibet issues. The two countries share consensus on many major international issues and enjoy sound cooperation.
