BP attempts to siphon leaking oil

05-16-2010 12:56 BJT

British energy giant, BP, has said it expects a tube designed to siphon oil leaking from a undersea gusher in the Gulf of Mexico to be working by Saturday night. Oil has continuously flowed into the Gulf now for nearly a month.

BP's initial plan involved using undersea robots to insert a long tube into a ruptured pipe, to funnel the oil to a ship at the surface. But the operation suffered a setback due to mechanical problems.

Doug Suttles, BP Chief Operating Officer said, "When they attempted to connect to it the frame shifted so they were unable to make that connection so what they had to do was bring that frame of the tool back to the surface and reorientate the frame so the next attempt to connect would be successful."

The spill has been flowing unabated since April 20th, when an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig sank a drilling platform and killed 11 workers. The untapped wellhead continues gushing oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

As thousands of barrels of crude oil pour into the Gulf, the US government has urged people to remain calm.

US Interior Secretary said, Ken Salazar said, "I think in the middle of this kind of crisis, what's most important is for us to be calm and confident, knowing that we have an incident. That is an emergency incident. We are doing everything humanely possible to control."

BP had tried to stop the oil leaking from the ruptured undersea well by flipping a blowout preventer switch. Its attempt to cap the oil with a giant steel containment dome also failed last week.

Local fishing authorities are concerned about the oil spill's effects on the seafood industry. Many of them who work in the Gulf are unsure how long they can stay in business with so many fishing grounds now closed.
