World Ocean Day offers an opportunity to recognize the challenges we face in maintaining a rational exploitation of oceanic resources. China, as a country that has abundant oceanic resources, has its task to fulfill.

China has about three-million square kilometers of sea area, with 18 thousand kilometers of coastline.

China's coastal tidal-flat area is over 1.7 million hectares, while marine oil reserves top 24.6 billion tons, and natural gas reserves are about 1600 billion cubic meters.

The oceanic economy has become a new engine for the nation's development. From 2001 to 2009, the average growth rate of the total oceanic production value is 16.3 percent.

Wong Lixin, official of State Oceanic Admin. of China, said, "At present, our exploitation of oceanic resources lacks a comprehensive layout. The industrial structure is not rational enough, and environmental pollution is severe in some areas."

According to official statistics, the country's sea level has risen 2.6 millimeters annually in the past three decades, one and a half times higher than the global average.

400 islands have been submerged in the past twenty years.

In 2009, more than 130 oceanic disasters, including storm tides and red tides occurred.
