Senior CPC official meets Italian president

A senior official of the Communist Party of China is visiting Italy. He Guoqiang, has met with Italian President, Giorgio Napolentano, and Foreign Minister Franco Frattini in Rome.

In the meeting with President Napolentano, He Guoqiang said current Sino-Italian relations have been developing well, especially trade ties and friendship between the two countries. He hopes both sides will continue to make joint efforts, pushing forward the strategic partnership.

He also expressed appreciation for measures taken by the European Union in tackling the debt crisis, saying China has been in support of the integration process of the EU.

In meeting with Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, He Guoqiang said both countries have been sharing views on major international issues. Meanwhile, the two leaders vowed to step up cultural exchanges.

On Monday, He Guoqiang also attended a cooperation forum on Chinese and Italian small and medium-sized enterprises in Milan. In his speech, He Guoqiang put forward proposals on cooperation between the two countries' small and medium-sized companies, encouraging them to extend business fields and deepen cooperative levels.

He Guoqiang is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. He arrived in Italy on Saturday for an official good-will visit, the first leg of his five-nation tour. He is expected to visit Iceland, Norway, Lithuania and Turkmenistan over the coming days.
