Earlier this morning we spoke to a local official in charge of the disaster relief work at the landslide site in Guizhou Province. She provided us with the latest information on the ongoing efforts to save those still trapped.
Zhen Yanchi, deputy director of Guizhou Civil Affairs Department, said, "As of 6 a.m. this morning, dozens of excavators and 600 soldiers were at the landslide site. Rescue efforts are still underway, feverishly and orderly. One body has been found so far, but the chance of finding the rest alive is slight. Our department has transported 200 tents to build a new relocation area. The one we built last night is not safe enough since it is close to the spot. In addition, thousands of garments, beds, plenty of water and food have been delivered to the evacuated villagers. We are also building temporary clinics to provide medical service. All the 18-hundred affected villagers are now being taken care of."
