Torrential downpours have pounded Taining County, located in East China's Fujian Province. More than 100 millimeters of rain fell in 10 hours on Wednesday, with one village receiving twice that amount.
The water level in a local river surged 3 meters above the warning line, and two of the four bridges connecting the county collapsed. Only one of the crossings remains in use, after the fourth was choked with silt.
Heavy vehicle transportation has been limited due to safety concerns. Water pipelines were breached as well, while power and communications facilities in most parts of the region were also damaged. Local authorities have activated emergency plans to deliver water, and repair efforts are underway.
