Authorities in Tongcheng City in east China's Anhui Province are set to blow up a leaking dyke on a swollen branch of the Yangtse River to divert flood waters away from villages.
They were scheduled to begin the project yesterday afternoon. But the plan was postponed because the explosives were damaged by flood waters. Armed police have been sent to Qingcao Township in Tongcheng City and have been laying sandbags along the Qingcao riverbank.
Heavy machinery including trucks and excavators have been moved into the river to slow the speed of the water coming through the 200 meter breach. However local authorities still fear the measures will not be able to hold the water back when heavy rain returns. The local meteorological bureau has forecast more heavy rain in the area over the next two days.
