Torrential rains have pounded southern regions of China for weeks. China's Ministry of Civilian Affairs says rainstorms and subsequent floods have left hundreds of people dead in 10 provinces and municipalities, mostly along the Yangtze River.

The Datong Hydrological station in the lower reach of the Yangtze River, has recorded the highest water levels since 2003. The Xiaguan Hydrological station also logged the highest level in a decade. 12 dams in Jiangxi province have reported possible breaches.

A total of 70-thousand people in flood hit area have been relocated. Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have ordered ministries and local governments to ensure the safety of the public and minimize property losses during the flood season.
