Rescuers have failed to close a breach of a flooded river embankment in northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
The Luofu River, a tributary of the Weihe River, breached its banks Saturday morning. More than 3,000 soldiers and militiamen managed to narrow the 80-meter gap to 2 meters. But the breach expanded to eight meters as stones and sand bags ran out. More than 6,000 residents in Huayin City had been evacuated before the flood. No casualties have been reported.
