China faces worst flooding in a decade

China is suffering its worst flooding in a decade. A total of 333 people have been killed in rainstorms and floods across the country since July 14th. 300 others remain missing.

July the 20th saw the first flood peak on the Yangtze River, a record water flow of 70,000 cubic meters a second. As of Wednesday morning, flood flow reached 56,000 cubic meters a second, the second flood peak this year. Some other major rivers have also risen above warning levels, including the Jialing, Hanjiang, and Huaihe.

As of 4 PM Tuesday, 140,000 homes and more than 400,000 hectares of crops had been destroyed. More than 3 million people had been relocated. Direct economic losses are estimated to be more than 50 billion yuan.
