The death toll from the massive mudslides in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 1,434, with 331 still missing. Nearly two weeks after the disaster, the effort to dredge the blocked Bailong River in Zhouqu County has entered the final stage.
Nearly a hundred bulldozers and excavators are working around the clock along the river bank. The water level of the blocked section of the barrier lake is decreasing. A massive sterilizing campaign has begun along the town's streets.
Meanwhile, education authorities in Gansu say all high school graduates in Zhouqu this year will be admitted by colleges in a bid to help those in the disaster zone get back on their feet. A shelter camp has also started construction. Mudslide evacuees presently residing at schools in Zhouqu are to be relocated there as students will start the new semester.
