The minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission, Zhang Ping, says China is enacting measures to ensure a food-secure society. These include increasing the annual grain harvest and creating new grain security legislation.
The minister says China would increase its grain output capacity to an annual yield of 550 million tons by 2020. That would be an increase of nearly 20 million tons from last year.
According to Zhang, the country could further strengthen its grain production capacity, by improving infrastructure construction, especially farmland irrigation system.
Expanding the use of fine breed, high-productivity technology and upgrading the farming industry's ability to resist disasters will also improve harvests.
He says the commission and other food administrative agencies will work together in a draft law on food and grain.
