ASEM summit to focus on "Quality of Life"

Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the 8th ASEM meeting on Monday and Tuesday in Brussels. The conference gathers leaders from the 27 EU Member States and 16 Asian countries, along with the European Commission and the ASEAN Secretariat. The focus of their conference will be to discuss common issues under the new motto "Quality of Life".

Leaders from the participating nations began arriving in Brussels for the important symposium.

ASEM participants are expected to discuss the final stages of getting out of the economic and financial crisis. The main focus will be on defining new supervisory arrangements and addressing public deficits.

Sustainable development, in particular Millennium Development Goals, will be at the heart of the debate.

Leaders will address economic and social development. The environment will also be a main concern. The topics of climate change, energy supply and availability of green technologies will also be covered.

Cross-border challenges, and regional issues are also expected to be addressed during the meeting.

ASEM leaders will also discuss how to promote people to people relations as a way of strengthening EU-Asia relations.

The Asia-Europe Meeting is a biennial event launched in 1996 to discuss common issues and global challenges.

The 48 nations from the two continents represent about half the world's GDP and 60 percent of global trade.
