Key US Mideast allies Jordan and Egypt have backed the Palestinian refusal to negotiate with Israel, after Israel refused to stop settlement construction in the West Bank. But they also urged more efforts to salvage peace talks mediated by Washington.

On Sunday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with Jordanian King Abdullah II in Amman. The Jordanian king stressed his country's support for the Palestinians in their efforts to resolve the decades-long Palestinian Israeli conflict. Abbas briefed Abdullah on Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.

Abbas said, "We should keep talking to the Arab League and we are not going to stop talking to the Americans about this. We will keep talking to Americans. If Israel stops building settlements we can continue talking to Israel."

Meanwhile, the US Mideast envoy George Mitchell has met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo to discuss the impasses ahead of an Arab League meeting this week, which Palestinians are expected to deliver a final decision on the fate of talks.

He said, "Despite their differences, both the government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority have asked us to continue these discussions in an effort to establish the conditions under which they can continue direct negotiations. They both want to continue those negotiations. They do not want to stop the talks."

Israel refused last week to extend its 10-month moratorium on new construction in West Bank settlements. It has thrown the month-old peace talks into doubt, as Palestinians had repeatedly threatened to quit if building resumes.
