In New Zealand, a fresh explosion has dashed all hopes of finding alive any of the 29 miners trapped in the West Coast town of Greymouth. Rescue teams had been in full gear and ready for a rescue, when the toxic gas level suddenly increased. And as the country prepares to mourn, Prime Minister John Key said at a news conference that an independent inquiry will be launched.

He said, "There are some basic questions that need to be answered. What caused the explosion? What could have been done to prevent that? Did we run the rescue effort as the way we should do? It is my belief that we did, but of course for the formal side of the inquiry, it needs to be tested and the wider issues that you raised about the conditions here."
