In Brazil, heavily armed men have halted buses and cars, robbed their passengers and set vehicles ablaze in Rio de Janeiro and nearby cities.

Police said at least four buses and 10 cars were burnt out in Rio's poorer northern and western areas overnight and one man was killed. Attacks also took place in Niteroi, a city about 14 kilometers from Rio, and in Duque de Caxias, which is just to the north of the city.

Security officials blame these ongoing violent attacks on drug gangs who are trying to convince authorities to drop a get-tough program. Violence has plagued Rio for decades and police launched a campaign earlier in an attempt to free shantytowns of gang control by the time of the 2014 football World Cup.
