Chinese, Russian FMs call for restraint on Korean Peninsula

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, are calling for restraint to avoid escalation of tension on the Korean Peninsula.

During a phone conversation with Lavrov, Yang said the situation is tense and may further deteriorate. China firmly opposes any action that would worsen the situation and wants both sides to remain calm and restrained, make contact and hold discussions in an effort to seek a peaceful settlement of the dispute.

China is willing to remain in close communication with Russia and coordinate efforts to prevent the situation from getting out of control. Lavrov said his country also wants calm and restraint from all parties concerned. Russia is willing to work with China to make active efforts to reduce the tension on the peninsula.
