A heavy storm has pounded California with record rainfall, forcing authorities in the San Joaquin Valley to evacuate some two thousand residents due to flooding. An estimated 400 to 500 homes are in danger.

The storm is expected to intensify Tuesday night and Wednesday, with between ten to twenty centimeters of rain. A sheriff's helicopter crew is trying to locate the source of the flooding, which may have come from ditches and canals that supply water to farms.

Two evacuation centers have been set up. Stormy weather has gripped California since late last week, triggering mostly minor flooding, mudslides, road closures and power cuts, but forecasters now warn of significant flooding dangers. Virtually the entire state is affected, from coastal cities to the Central Valley, Sierra Nevada and southern deserts.
