Are they friends? Are they foes? Or, perhaps, neither? Relations between China and the United States are often viewed as the biggest riddle in today's world, judging by the size of the two countries, and the number of people affected by these ties. Xie Zheng talks to some analysts attempting to peel under the rhetoric.

Seven decades ago, they fought side by side in the Second World War. Five years later, they fought each other at the frontline of the Cold War on the Korean Peninsula. Four decades ago, a ping-pong match guided relations toward a win-win track, and 10 years later, they established diplomatic relations.

Former Chinese ambassador to US Zhou Wenzhong said, "Although they do disagree with one another in different issues, the main stream is cooperation in our relations. Actually, in the last 30 years since normalization, cooperation has always been the mainstream in the relations."

Not all of the news is good. US arms sales to Taiwan have repeatedly strained ties, since the mainland views the island as one of its core interests. There are also many other issues resulting from a strategic shift in influence.

World Affairs Commentator Brandon Blackburn-Dwyer said, "China is rapidly becoming the senior member of Asia, whereas the United States is maintaining the senior member of the Western half of the world. As such, you're going to have major disagreement with the North Korea crisis, with extended issues of trade imbalances, resurgence of Taiwan arms sales, these issues have really shown that we can have good years. We can also, unfortunately, have bad years."

Dean Yan Xuetong of Tsinghua University, said, "China should have an equal standing point in dealing with the US. In the next decade or so, China might not have the capacity to replace the US as the most influential power in the world. But the US also needs to adapt to the new situation that China is growing, and closing its gaps with the US."

With all the challenges, the two countries remain each other's second largest trading partner. A recent US Congressional Report lauded China's purchases of American Treasury Securities, which helped keep interest rates relatively low. Low-cost products made in China also benefit US consumers, and help control inflation.

For four decades, relations between China and the United States have experienced highs and lows. As two influential powers in today's world, they have become so inter-dependant that conflict would be too costly for both. With opportunities and difficulties ahead, the two countries don't have much choice but to work together, for a more peaceful and prosperous world.
