A top Chinese arms control negotiator talks to CCTV, and explains the scope of cooperation between China and the US in joint efforts and shared goals of nuclear non-proliferation.

Cheng Jingye, Director-General of Dept. of Arms Control & Disarmament, MFA, said, "Over the years, as I said, China is an active member of the international community in the area of arms control and non-proliferation.

We have had a lot of exchanges and cooperation with other countries, including the United States. We'll continue this kind of exchanges and cooperation. In the joint statement by the two presidents, it said China and the United States, they underlined their commitment to eventual realization of a world without nuclear weapons. And their commitment to further promote this process.

The two countries, as I understand, would work together in promoting the entering into force of the CTBT, and also start negotiations of cut off treaties in the conference of disarmament. And also both presidents have underlined their cooperation in nuclear security.

A memorandum of understanding have been agreed between the two countries, by which a center of excellence relating to nuclear weapons will be established in China. So I do see a scope of cooperation between the two countries."
