Presidents of West African countries have stepped up the pressure on Cote D'ivore's incumbent leader Laurent Gbagbo, ridding him of an ally at the top of a regional central bank who had safeguarded his access to funds.

International pressure is growing for Gbago to cede power after a November presidential election, showed he lost to rival Alassane Ouattara. Last month, a regional bank announced it would no longer accept Gbagbo's signature,

However, bank governor, a close ally of Gbagbo, failed to impose the decision by the bank's ministers. An emergency heads of state summit was held in Mali's capital, to announce the replacement of Cote d'Ivoire's bank governor.

Soumaila Cisse, President of UENOA, said, "The conference is concerned about the impact of the non-application of the ministers' decision on the stability of the economic, financial and monetary system of the union."

The current vice-minister would take over until a permanent replacement is found.

Soro Cuillaume, UM in Ouattara Gov't, said, "The conclusion presented is clear. The governor has resigned and the president Allasane Outtara will propose another governor."

Gbagbo's camp did not immediately react to the move, but it has brushed off international efforts to squeeze it of funding, and so far appears to be retaining control of the bulk of revenues from coca and oil production.
