China and Japan have begun their first strategy talks since 2009, amid an easing of tension between the two Asian giants.

China's Vice Foreign Minister, Zhang Zhijun, and his Japanese counterpart, Kenichiro Sasae, met in Beijing on Monday. The meetings are expected to cover a diverse range of topics, from regional security to the movie industry.

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Japan. The meetings will seek to lay the groundwork for high-level dialogue in the run-up to the anniversary.

Sino-Japanese relations deteriorated sharply last September, when Japan detained a Chinese ship captain, after his trawler collided with Japanese patrol boats near the disputed Diaoyu Islands.
