The Japanese government has expanded the evacuation zone around the Fukushima nuclear plant to 30 kilometers. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said that was due to accumulated radiation in the area.

He also said residents of areas outside the 30-kilometer radius should be prepared to evacuate in the event of an emergency.

Meanwhile, workers still struggle to regain control of plant that was hit by the earthquake and tsunami in March.

Earlier on Thursday, the Japanese government sealed off the 20-kilometer area surrounding the plant.
