A 29-year-old Canadian man has appeared in court to face charges of murdering a female Chinese student.

Her boyfriend in China witnessed the struggle via webcam. Canadian Police are investigating but have not released any further details about the crime.

It's a tragedy for the family.

The parents of the murdered student have left for Toronto to claim their daughter's body. Her father described total shock at the news of the crime.

Liu Jianhui, Father of Murdered Student, said, "At the beginning I didn't believe it was true, she was a very hard working, and an outstanding girl."

Liu Qian was a student at York University. Her body was found on Friday in her apartment in Toronto.

The 23-year-old Beijing native was chatting with her boyfriend by webcam when a man knocked on the door.

Meng Xianchao, Boyfiriend of Murdered Student, said, "The man tried to hold Liu Qian, she was resisting and saying no no please don't. at that time my mind went blank."

Meng watched the struggle in shock before Liu's webcam was shut off.

Meng then contacted friends in Toronto who in turn called police.

Meng Xianchao, Boyfiriend of Murdered Student, said, "I was so far away. I couldn't reach her. I felt helpless and I couldn't calm down."

Attacks on females have happened before on and around York's campus.

It is located near one of Toronto's rougher neighborhoods.

Liu Qian's uncle said more should be done to ensure safety.

Liu Jianliang, Uncle of Murdered Student, said, "When a country accepts foreign students, it should have certain policies and measures to protect them, and the government should reinforce the job of safety monitoring for these students."

Little is known about the accused murderer Brian Dickson, but there are reports he was once a student at York University. So far, police have not released any more details and asked the media not to publish any photos of the charged man.

They say it could compromise the investigation.

Dickson did not enter a plea, and is scheduled to be back in court on April 26th.
