Two earthquakes have struck southeast Spain in quick succession. Wednesday's quakes killed at least ten people, injured dozens and caused major damage to buildings.

It was the highest quake-related death toll in Spain in more than 50 years.

The epicentre of the magnitude 4.4 and 5.3 quakes was close to the town of Lorca. They struck two hours apart.

Nervous groups of residents gathered in public places, calling relatives and friends to make sure they were safe.

Quake Survior, Lorca, Spain, said, "My husband said quickly, quickly let's go down to the street, and I picked up the dog and we came out it was really really strong."

The quakes caused structural damage to older buildings and masonry.

A large church bell was also among the rubble. Spanish state TV reported that schoolchildren usually gathered at that spot around that time, and if it had happened 10 minutes later, a "tragedy" could have occurred.

Dozens of injured people were being treated at the scene and a field hospital was set up in the town of about 85 thousand people. About 270 patients at the local hospital were being evacuated by ambulance as a precaution after the building sustained minor damage.

Spain's National Geographic Institute said the country has about 25 hundred quakes a year, but only a handful are actually felt by people. Spain's south and southeast are the most earthquake-prone regions.
